The Breast Girl
Meet Courtney - RRA, ARDMS, CN-BI, CLEC
(and learn more about the reason behind The Breast Girl)
I’m Courtney - board certified Registered Radiologist Assistant (RRA), Certified Lactation Educator Counselor (CLEC) and proud mom to 3 boys. I am also a credentialed Radiologic Technologist (RT) (R) (ARRT) and Sonographer (ARDMS). I have a specialty in patient navigation in breast imaging and a true passion for all things related to women’s health.
I received my Bachelors of Science in Diagnostic Imaging and Master’s degree as a Radiologist Assistant from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT. I worked as a Radiologic Technologist and Sonographer before practicing as a RRA at Weill Cornell Medicine at New-York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City in 2012. At Weill Cornell, I helped to design and implement a radiology consultation service centered around patient education and physician ordering assistance. A major part of the consultation service, my favorite part, is focused on breast imaging - helping patients to understand their results, prepare for exams and provide support as they navigate through the breast imaging department and beyond. I became certified as a patient navigator in breast imaging (CN-BI), and the rest was history. It was at Weill Cornell that I came to be known as “the breast girl” and my passion for breast wellness truly grew. I still enjoy working at Weill Cornell and being a part of the consultation program today!
After having my first son, I was similarly drawn to breastfeeding through my own experience in navigating how to feed my baby. I noticed that needs for support existed on both ends of the breast wellness spectrum - breastfeeding to breast cancer screening - different, yet all connected. This naturally led me to pursue certification as a Certified Lactation Educator Counselor (CLEC) through University of California San Diego (and I aspire to obtain IBCLC credentials!). I also became a Global Educator through the Know Your Lemons Foundation. Despite the challenges that breastfeeding can bring, nursing all three of my children well into their toddler years has been something I will cherish forever. I know first hand how important these experiences are for families in both big and small ways.
I currently live on the coast in Southeastern Connecticut with my husband and three boys. I am a local La Leche League Leader. My favorite color is pink. I love barre workouts, bubble baths, long chats with friends, chai lattes and all things Disney. Connecting with people is absolutely the best part of what I do and I am so happy that you found your way here!
What is an RRA?
A Registered Radiologist Assistant (RRA) is an advanced level care provider in the field of Radiology. Under the supervision of a Radiologist, RRAs can assess and manage patients, perform a select set of clinical procedures, participate in patient and physician education, and recognize patterns on images to communicate to the radiologist. RRAs play a critical role in helping to increase efficiency and optimizing the patient experience within Radiology.
The RRA is a newly emerging field and one that I so enjoy being a part of, advocating for, and making connections through.
What is a CLEC?
A Certified Lactation Education Counselor (CLEC) is a lactation specialist that has expertise on providing education and facilitating the normal course of breastfeeding. As a CLEC, clients are always referred to see an IBCLC for complex cases that require more serious assessment and intervention, or seek medical care from a physician.
